I am looking for a dslr and am considering the canon 40D and the canon 5D-which is best?

I would like to add a few details to my question. I take a variety of shots- landscape,sports,portrait,macro, in general, a wide variety of situations. I want a dslr that is solid in all shooting conditions and that is well built,dependable and reliable.
